Objective: Research suggests that children with hearing impairments are more vulnerable to emotional and behavioral challenges. The current study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy on behavioral problems and emotional self-regulation in children with hearing impairment.
Methods: A Quasi-experimental study with a pretest, post-test design, and control group was conducted. A convenient sampling method was used to select 24 girls, ages 7 to 11 years (mean age=9.17± 3.32 years) with hearing impairment and subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups, each consisting of 12 girls. The experimental group received ten cognitive rehabilitation therapy sessions. Data was collected using two measures, the Connors Parents Scale and the emotional Self-Regulation Questionnaire. MANCOVA was used to analyze the data.
Results: The finding revealed that the cognitive rehabilitation program had a significant effect on behavioral problems and emotional self-regulation of children with hearing impairment (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Children with hearing problems showed improvement in behavioral problems and emotional self-regulation following the cognitive rehabilitation program. Therefore, providing a cognitive rehabilitation program for these children is of particular importance.
