Objective: Narcissism has extensive intrapersonal and interpersonal consequences and it is a predictor of several psychopathologies. Pathological narcissism is considered as a risk factor for suicidal ideations. The present study investigated the mediating role of difficulties in emotion regulation and rumination in the relationship between pathological narcissism and suicidal ideations.
Methods: A total of 463 students of national universities in Tehran (232 girls, 231 boys) participated in the present study. Data have been collected from the Brief version of the Pathological Narcissism Questionnaire (B-PNI), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), the Rumination Responses Scale (RSS), and The Beck Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (BSSI).
Results: The results obtained from the research showed that pathological narcissism had a positive and significant relationship with suicidal ideations, difficulties in emotion regulation and rumination (p < .01). However, the relationship of vulnerable narcissism with each of the other variables was stronger than that of grandiose narcissism with those variables. Also, the results of the structural equation analysis showed that difficulties in emotion regulation played a significant mediating role in the relationship between vulnerable narcissism and suicidal ideations (p < .01).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that the difficulties in emotion regulation, considering the underlying role of vulnerable narcissism, has a key role in explaining suicidal ideations in the general population of students.
